The Lost Kingdom of Mustang, Nepal (2017)
I’ve always traveled with a camera in hand, documenting my adventures, but this trip to Mustang, Nepal, felt different. I had meticulously researched this remote Himalayan region, known as a hidden kingdom near the Tibetan border. Its Tibetan-Buddhist culture, preserved for centuries, drew me in, offering a glimpse into what Tibet might have been like before the 1950 Chinese invasion. However, despite my preparations, I quickly realized that Mustang would surprise me in ways I hadn’t anticipated.
Determined to experience Mustang before modernization altered its authenticity, I set off to explore its rich traditions and culture. A newly built road was beginning to connect the region to the rest of Nepal, but I chose the original path, a trail wide enough for families and their yaks, to truly immerse myself in its history. Traveling off-grid, with limited electricity and no internet, I aimed to document how the area's identity is evolving under the influences of better transportation, Western culture, and tourism. My journey began with a flight to Jomsom, where my guide, Kipa, and I started our trek.
